1. Is it possible to marry a foreigner in Thailand?

Registering a marriage in Thailand between a foreigner and a Thai national is required by law if neither party has a spouse or if one of the parties was previously married but dissolved. The divorce requires at least 310 days before the marriage registration can be considered valid. If one of the parties still has a spouse and they are not divorced, it may be determined that the marriage registration is invalid.

2. Process of marriage registration in Thailand

First step: To submit the affidavit or certificate of single status and a copy of the passport. These documents can be obtained from the home country’s embassy in Thailand.

Second step: To translate the affidavit or certificate of single status, as well as any other required documents.

After obtaining the certificate from the Embassy, the next step is to translate the document from its original English to Thai, and have the translation certified as correct by a certified translator. While other documents that are not in Thai must also be translated into Thai.

Third step: The document should be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department of Consular Affairs.

When the documents have been translated, they must be submitted for legalization to the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so that they become legally. For this step, any type of document, if it has already been translated, may be legalized by the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Forth step: To register a marriage with the proper authorities.

You must submit all required documents, which have been legalized by the Department of Consular Affairs, to the local district office or the district office in order to submit an application to register your marriage with the official. It is essential that you have your interpreter translate all details of the marriage registration so that both parties fully comprehend all conditions and steps for the registration. The official will provide both parties with a marriage certificate (Khor.Ror.3) and a marriage registration (Khor.Ror.2) upon completion of all procedures.   • Identification card (original + a copy)
  • House registration (original + a copy)
  • One Medical certificate stating that currently non-pregnant
  • Certificate of surname change (original + a copy) if any
  • Identification card of 2 witnesses
  • Legalization application from the Department of Consular Affairs
  •  One Photo (size 1 inch )

In the event that this party was previously married and divorced from the spouse, it may require the following documents:

  • Divorce certificate (original + a copy)
  • Death certificate (in case of former spouse passed away)

Required documents for foreigner

  • Passport (original)
  • Single status certificate or affidavit translated into Thai and legalized by both Embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Copy of passport translated into Thai legalized by both Embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Certificate of surname change (original) *if any*
  • Certificate of surname change translated into Thai legalized by both Embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Legalization application from the Department of Consular Affairs

In the event that this party was previously married and divorced from the spouse, it may require the following documents:

  • Divorce certificate (original + a copy) *it can be requested at the Embassy of each country*
  • Death certificate translated into Thai legalized by both Embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
